People use the milk of magnesia as a laxative to relieve the conditions of constipation, indigestion and heartburn. Milk of magnesia can in fact reduce the amount of stomach acids, producing a bowel movement within a few hours.

Therefore, milk of magnesia could theoretically be used to treat constipation conditions manifested by the following symptoms:

  • hard stools,
  • swelling,
  • feeling of fullness even after going to the bathroom,
  • discomfort in the abdominal area.

Forms of the milk of magnesia

Milk of magnesia is available for purchase in both tablet and liquid form. When using the tablet form, it is generally necessary to chew them before swallowing. Milk of magnesia is also available as a liquid or concentrated liquid: this form is generally not recommended for children under the age of 12.

Dosage of milk of magnesia

In order to avoid experiencing the soon shared side effects, people should not take more doses of milk of magnesia than recommended on the package or by their doctor.

Generally, to take milk of magnesia in liquid form it is sufficient to mix it with milk or water, shaking the bottle well before measuring the dose. The dosage varies depending on why the person is using the drug.

Generally speaking, people who use the milk of magnesia for constipation should drink a glass of water with the relative dose of milk of magnesia, using the dispenser (thick, 15ml or the spoon provided). It is advisable to take the drug before going to bed.

Using the "original" version of milk of magnesia for constipation, the dosage in milliliters (ml) varies according to age, with adults who can take 30 - 60 ml, and children aged 6 to 11 who can take it instead 15 - 30 ml.

For the concentrated version of milk of magnesia, the dosage is lower: adults can take 15 - 30 ml while it is normally not recommended to give this drug to children under 12 years.

As anticipated, there are also chewable tablets for children and adults, but you should still drink a full glass of liquid with each dose. The dosage varies according to age: children aged 6 to 13 can take 3 - 6 tablets per day, while children aged 2 to 6 can take 1 - 3 tablets per day. It is advisable to ask a doctor before giving this drug to children under 2 years of age.

In any case, people shouldn't take milk of magnesia as a laxative for more than 7 days straight. Anyone who still needs a laxative or has persistent pain in the stomach area should therefore seek medical attention again.

We remind you in this regard that milk of magnesia usually relieves constipation within 6 hours of taking. If a person does not have a bowel movement after using milk of magnesia, they should stop using it and speak to a doctor.

Milk of magnesia for other digestive problems

Along with constipation relief, people may choose to use milk of magnesia for relief as well stomach ache and theacid indigestion. In this case, adults should take 5 - 15ml at a time with water, and repeat up to 4 times a day as needed. However, they should not take more than 60ml in any 24 hour period.

Obviously, it should be borne in mind that when using milk of magnesia as an antacid, stress could also have a laxative effect.

Side effects

A common side effect of milk of magnesia is the stomach cramp, although most people who take milk of magnesia have no side effects.

Other more common side effects of milk of magnesia are:
