How to make sangria

There original recipe provides for the use of peaches, for those who are allergic to peaches, they can omit them and flavor it with other fruits, including prunes and apples. Let's see, for now, theoriginal recipe of Sangria:

  • A bottle of red wine with a high alcohol content and high body
  • 3 yellow peaches
  • half an untreated lemon
  • an orange
  • a cup of rum or brandy
  • 2 or 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 3 cloves
  • cinnamon peel
  • soda, seltzer water or, for those who prefer it sweeter, gaseous

How to prepare Sangria?Wash and cut the peaches until very thin slices. Place them in a large jug together with the orange and lemon cut into slices with peel. Add the other ingredients (except the soda) and cover with the wine.

Place the jug in a cool place, covered with a plate. Let it sit overnight. When you wake up, add the soda and, when ready to serve, fill the lime, add a few ice cubes and a slice of fruit.

How to make white sangria or Catalan sangria

As stated, theCatalan sangriait is traditionally prepared withWhite wine. Therewhite wine sangriait can be prepared with more full-bodied white wines as well as with a good sparkling white wine, in Catalonia it is often also prepared with sparkling wine. The choice is yours!

Here are the ingredients formake Catalan sangria:

  • a bottle of white wine
  • 2 Royal Gala apples or yellow-skinned apples
  • 2 nectarines
  • 4 plums
  • 1 dl of tamarind syrup *
  • 0.8 dl of vodka

The tamarind syrup adds an exotic touch to theWhite sangria, is of Hispanic origin, it is not easy to find in supermarkets but on Amazon it is available proposed by different brands. Among the various proposals I point out the 1 liter bottle by Fabbri which contains 11% tamarind extract (at this Amazon address for all the info) and the tamarind syrup produced by Cedral Tassoni with 32% tamarind extract (at this Amazon page for all information). The price is similar.

Tamarind is a fruit with digestive properties, it is widely used in Latin America for the production of liqueurs and, here in Italy, it is seen on the exotic fruit stand including avocado and papaya.

How to make white sangria?Wash the fruit and cut into thin slices. Arrange the fruit in a pitcher. Also in this case the fruit must be kept with all the peel. You will only need to remove the seeds.

Cover the fruit with thewhite wine for sangriachilled and add the frozen vodka. Add 3 dl of ice water and tamarind syrup. Let it rest for at least two hours before serving the sangria, accompanied by the same fruit.

Note: if you want, you can omit the tamarind syrup and add some sugar, the flavor ofWhite sangria it will remain sweet but less flavored.
